Requires travel throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area.Pay Range: $62,400 $65,000 commensurate with experienceAbout CAIR-LA’s Policy FellowshipThe Policy Fellowship is a prestigious 12-month opportunity for early career leaders seeking to gain hands-on public policy experience and invest in their personal and professional growth.
Fellows are integrated into CAIR-LA’s policy teams to develop, plan, and implement the organization’s policy and advocacy efforts while they simultaneously work with CAIR-LA to focus on the skills to support their personal growth and deepen their leadership perspective.
We’re looking for individuals who have a strong commitment to immigrants’ rights, racial equity, and social justice for BIPOC communities and can demonstrate a sincere interest in building themselves into policy leaders.
At least 50% of the Fellows project will focus on advocating for equity for immigrants in Los Angeles County, including work with the Immigrants’ Are LA campaign, as well as working on policy and programs related efforts related to Afghan arrivals in the Greater Los Angeles area.Duties & Responsibilities:Legislative research, writing, coordination, and advocacy:Collaborate with the Public Affairs Manager and Senior Organizing Manager to coordinate the development and implementation of a local/state policy and advocacy agenda on priority issues for the Muslim community.Monitor, interpret, and summarize local and state legislative proposals and policies, and regional trends that impact Muslims.Spearhead the creation and implementation of pro-immigrant policies in local/state legislative and budgetary processes, including supporting Immigrants Are LA campaignInitiate and implement advocacy strategies like local town halls, action alerts, call-in campaigns, etc.Develop and maintain a local and state legislative interactions database, tracking systems, and advocacy program files.Government affairs coordination with law makers:Facilitate and maintain strategic working relationships and communication with local and state policymakers, officials, key agencies (e.G LA Office of Immigrant Affairs) and others.Hold periodic local/state meetings and strategic engagements with legislators and officials and provide policy analysis to policymakers and their staff.Serve as the primary local and state representative for communicating CAIR-LA’s policy position in City Council/County meetings, committee hearings, legislative meetings, coalition spaces and efforts within LA County.Public Affairs and Outreach:Produce relevant educational materials including policy analysis reports, briefing documents, and fact sheets on local/state immigrant and immigration issues for different audiences (e.G internal for staff, community members, legislators) as needed.Support writing policy statements, advocacy digital toolkits, talking points, sample letters, and other material to advance the CAIR-LA’s policy and advocacy agenda, inform the community of policy updates, and encourage community engagement.Support CAIR-LA staff and community membership engagement in legislative processes and advocacy efforts (e.G legislative meetings, briefings, local/state hearings, press engagements, etc.) through training and workshops, leading working groups, providing political updates.Represent CAIR-LA in local/state political engagements, media involvement and other organizational efforts as needed.Lead collaboration with immigrant rights networks and organizational partners to advance CAIR-LA’s local and state policy agendaOther Duties as assigned, including but not limited to:Support the Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director, Public Affairs, and Programs and Organizing departments in other federal, statewide, or local efforts as needed.Full-time with occasional evenings and weekends required.Occasional travel locally for outreach including participating in community events.All CAIR staff are required to assist in general duties such as answering phones, weekly outreach, fundraising, job recruitment, and other office tasks as required.COVID-19 Considerations: All employees and visitors are required to follow safety procedures such as wearing a mask on-site.
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment before date of hire.Qualifications:D., Master of Public Policy, Master of Public Affairs or elated experience in a similar field required.Previous policy or community organizing experience is required.Experience with base-building, coalition building, and leadership development in a diverse community context is required.Familiarity, knowledge and experience working with the American Muslim community on issues of policy is required.Experience with strategizing and campaign management is required.Passion for CAIR-CA’s mission and values.Growth mindset and ability to receive constructive feedback.Self-starting with an entrepreneurial spirit.Excellent personal accountability and follow-through.Can meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment.Familiarity with digital campaign and organizing tools is a plus.Willingness and flexibility to change job requirements as the team grows.Compensation:Kaiser Health Insurance and Blue Cross PPO Dental Plan for staff members, their spouse, and their childrenPaid time off for incoming staff includes: 12 Paid vacation days, 10 holidays, and 10 sick daysIRA matching programProfessional development budget.
