Justice Reinvestment & Community Safety Manager


This is a Full-time position in Anaheim, CA posted May 31, 2022.

Reports to: CAIR-CA Executive Council with a direct report at CAIR-CA office that houses the positionSchedule Type: Temporary, Full-time (Exempt)Location: Hybrid schedule with opportunities in Anaheim, Central California, San Diego, or San Francisco Bay AreaPay Range: $70,000 – $88,500, for one year, commensurate with experience and geographic locationDuties & Responsibilities:Establishing CAIR-CA’s justice reinvestment initiatives: Working with all four CAIR-CA offices to document and further establish regional advocacy efforts that support community needs and priorities, including safety, while avoiding discriminatory, Islamophobic, or securitized notions of the Muslim community.Institutionalizing knowledge of past campaigns: Work with the four CAIR-CA offices to document past campaigns challenging the securitization of Muslim communities by law enforcement to inform future advocacy and coalition building.Research and writing: Research and detail current law enforcement policies and practices in the Greater Los Angeles, Sacramento, Central California, San Diego, and San Francisco Bay Area that use taxpayer funding to the detriment of the Muslim community in California.Collaborate with CAIR-CA’s policy departments to develop legislative priorities: Work closely with the policy advocates within all four offices to create local and statewide strategies and campaign goals to reach positive political outcomes on issues of justice reinvestment.Lead statewide direct actions: Lead the strategic implementation of CAIR-CA’s justice reinvestment campaign initiatives by organizing campaigns, creating campaign content, and assisting in the regional escalation of strategies to reach policy goals.Public Affairs and Outreach: Duties will be centered on building out a network of organizations and allies to take action on issues of justice reinvestment, with a regional and statewide focus. Additionally, the manager will develop external facing reports, updates, communication, and relationships that help galvanize community and foundation support for CAIR-CA’s justice reinvestment efforts.Develop and advance advocacy partnerships: Develop relationships and regular communication to advance justice reinvestment priorities with allies, coalition partners, and other organizations to win justice reinvestment campaigns. This may include joint strategy meetings, joint actions or other events, relationship building, etc.Maintain government relationships: Build and maintain relationships with state and local level elected officials that are important stakeholders in justice reinvestment, police accountability, and criminal justice reform.Community outreach & education: Work with CAIR-CA’s team to coordinate and publicize workshops, teach-ins, and trainings that will empower the Muslim community on issues of justice reinvestment, police accountability, and criminal justice reform. These include, but are not limited to know your rights presentations on various legal rights, listening sessions, policy trainings, etc.Political education: Educate grassroots leaders and members on power and SWOT analysis, legislative and electoral policy, campaign development and evaluation, and other tools needed for a successful issue campaign.Draft reports and updates: Draft campaign reports and updates for various stakeholders including community partners, lawmakers, and allies. Contribute to sustainability of the CAIR-CA’s justice reinvestment efforts: Work with CAIR-CA’s executive council to create content for community and foundation updates to further CAIR-CA’s efforts to build out a statewide justice reinvestment department.Other:May over see one employeeFull-time with occasional evenings and weekends availability required.Potential for position extension based on contract renewal and funding availabilityOccasional travel locally for outreach including participating in community events.All CAIR staff are required to assist in general duties such as answering phones, weekly outreach, fundraising, job recruitment, and other office tasks as required.COVID-19 Considerations: All employees and visitors are required to follow safety procedures such as wearing a mask on-site.
