Part Time Laborer

DescriptionThe City of Anaheim Community Services
– Parks Departmentis seeking a qualified Part Time Laborerfor the maintenance and janitorial upkeep of our City parksandyards.The Laborer is the front line to our community to ensure that our citizens and visitors have a pleasant and memorable experience.

While the Laborer may perform any of the duties listed below in the Essential Functions section, custodial/janitorial duties of the park public restrooms will be the primary function and care and delivery of shade trees.

As the Laborer performs duties throughout the City and drives a City vehicle, applicants must have a valid driver license in good standing.

This recruitment will also fill our seasonal fire clearance and TreePower program laborer needs.

Laborers for the fire clearance performs seasonal preventative landscape maintenance to reduce fire danger.

Laborers for the TreePower programare responsible for upkeep of a city yard and caring for and delivering trees to customers of Anaheim Public Utilities.Ideal candidates will have prior work experience in custodial/janitorial, parks/grounds maintenance, tree delivery, and/or preventative fire clearance.Please thoroughly review this posting in its entirety, including the environmental and work conditions discussed in the Supplemental Information section below.The mission of the Community Services Department is to enrich the quality of life of individuals, families, and the community by providing excellent parks, trails, and recreational facilities through outstanding customer service, sustainable environmental practices, and strong employee development and commitment.Anaheim today has 63 parks encompassing nearly 700 acres.

Included are “mini parks” of up to three acres in size, “neighborhood parks” from five to thirteen acres, and “community parks” as large as 27 acres.

Anaheim also has several “special use parks,” providing a range of activities from tennis courts and skate parks to hiking trails and nature preserves.

Essential FunctionsThe following functions are typical for this classification.

Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.* Cleaning, disinfecting, and stocking restrooms.* Maintain and repair playground equipment, picnic tables, picnic shelters, and barbecues; maintain park amenities such as bleachers, basketball, tennis and volleyball course, drinking fountains, and pond.* Assist in the renovation of turf and sport fields.* Lay out and line sport fields.* Clean parks of litter and debris.* Remove signs, non-hazardous spills and illegally dumped items and debris, service trash cans, and perform weed abatement in City Right-of-Way, slopes and hillsides.* Set-up traffic safety devices and barricades to control traffic around work sites and special events and ensure safe conditions for the general public and city workers.* Observe safe work methods, policies and procedures and make appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.* Maintain vehicles, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition and ensure equipment is secured at the close of the workday as assigned.* Shovel and rake dirt, gravel and asphalt; dig holes and backfill; clean and sweep work areas.* Clean and maintain tools and use equipment as trained and required.* Trim shrubs; prune small trees and bushes.* May operate chipper, chain saws, and steam cleaner as required.* May assist with public inquires and concerns.* May observe and report on the work performed by contractors.* Maintain and repair city yard, clean yard of litter and debris, care for, deliver, and plant trees.* Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.QualificationsExperience and Training: An equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.Knowledge of: Basic construction, maintenance work; the safe and proper use of standard hand and common power tools; methods used in basic laborer work; safety precaution and practices necessary when working with hand power equipment; routine maintenance practices as related to grounds, and streets; English usage; safe driving rules and practices; and customer service techniques.Ability to: Perform basic construction, modification, maintenance and repair work; understand and follow instructions; learn and apply applicable safety regulations; operate a vehicle; perform strenuous manual labor at a variety of work sites; operate job related power equipment; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; communicate effectively orally; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Possess a valid Class C California Driver’s License by date of appointment.Supplemental InformationPlease be advised of the following environmental and work conditions:Environmental Conditions: Exposure to smoke, fumes, gas, untreated sewage, excessive heat and cold, high frequency noise, dirt, dust, grease, oil, pesticides and work in high traffic areas and in inclement weather.Physical Conditions: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs and ladders, stoop, twist and bend repeatedly, squat and kneel, crawl, grasp items, reach overhead, use both hands, legs and feet, lift, carry, push and pull up to 100 pounds, speak clearly and hear conversation, have touch and feeling senses, depth perception and color vision and corrected vision sufficient for near and distance vision.This is a part time position, hours can vary weekly (maximum 990 hours per year) with no minimum number of hours guaranteed.
